Yesterday Wasn't Any Better - Eugenics

As messed up as our culture may seem today, I have to steadily remind myself that there has never been a generation that hasn't had some major things messed up in it. I can hardly believe the transgender argument that has become the norm the past couple of years, and when I really think about the dialogue we're having over needing to use the restroom of the gender on your birth certificate, I laugh a little in disbelief. What is going on here? Where did common sense go?

“Logic!" said the Professor half to himself. "Why don't they teach
logic at these schools?"
― C.S. Lewis, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe

Oh, for the good ol' days, right? If only there were good ol' days.

For instance, did you realize our country practiced eugenics between 1907 and the 1970s? And many of the sterilizations were without consent, as many states had "compulsory sterilization" programs (i.e. you ain't got a choice). What is eugenics, you ask? It's rooted in the Darwinian belief that we can control how well our race progresses by weeding out the ones that aren't such a benefit to society. That includes mentally disabled, inmates, poor, the wrong race, feeble-minded... or whoever you feel like putting in that category, so long as you're the one holding the sterilization equipment. You then sterilize that group of people (let's say, 60,000 US citizens), stopping them from being able to produce offspring that, of course, would have turned out just like them. Margaret Sanger, the founder of Planned Parenthood, saw it as a great benefit to society, as "the unfit," or "human waste," had been weighing down society. Just look at the picture at the top of this article, shaming certain people for even considering having children!

Can you imagine being forced to not have children, just because your society decided it would be best? I shudder to think about it. And so, I am reminded that, no matter how bleak our society seems today, it was not better 100 years ago. There is nothing new under the sun. The world, since the fall, always has had its odd, terrible social arguments that Christians have had to fight against. And so it will be until Christ returns. Don't put down your sword or lose heart; keep fighting for what honors God.

"He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?" -Micah 6:8

  1. Thank you for the reminder! We often think things are so much worse now... Until you read history... Or even read the Bible!
